As a black gamer this is a really interesting perspective. Thanks for sharing. I’ve been called the n-word a million times playing games online but it all pales in comparison to the things said to anybody who sounds like a girl or woman. The toxicity that permeates in online gaming discourse is an interesting window into how a lot of people must really feel. I hear some political discourse now that is inflammatory and shocking to people and I just laugh and think…y’all must not play Madden with a mic on or never played COD.

I dont think there are clean solutions to policing this speech. I appreciate games like Apex Legends that allow players effective communication tools without a mic. Maybe that’s the future.
